MARCH 2010

FROM THE COMMANDER:  Jim Lorenzo

Good day to all and once again I hope this finds everyone in good health and good spirits. And once again, I’m sorry for being late this month. I was supposed to be in the hospital. As a matter of fact I was in the hospital, shaved, prepped and 10 minutes from the knife when they kicked me out because of low electrolytes. They rescheduled my knee replacement for 31 March. I want to thank everyone that called to wish me a speedy recovery even thought I don’t need it yet. It is great to be back here with all my friends at YOUR VFW Post.

1st,          Based on the current economic conditions here in and around Calhoun County, it has become necessary to make some changes here at YOUR post. Beginning 1 March 2010, we will change from having a band every weekend to just one weekend a month which will be the first weekend of each month. I’m happy to report that the “Southern Nites Band” has accepted our offer to become our house band with their first appearance on Friday, 2nd and 3rd of April 2010. I’d like to say thank you to all of the members that have faithfully supported our weekend dances for the past 40 plus years and I hope that you will continue to support the changes that are being made. In addition, although it has become necessary to make these changes now, we’re looking forward to the economy strengthening so that we can once again revert back to our old schedule of a band each weekend. Again, I’d like to thank all of you that have supported YOUR VFW.

2nd,     I reported this last month but they haven’t slowed down. YOUR Post Surgeon (Tim Wallace) is constantly busy. He along with your Senior Vice have been making the rounds between Hospital Visits and Nursing Home Visits. The Tim Wallace takes his position very seriously and should you or a loved one need anything, please don’t hesitate to call him.

3rd,      We’re starting our own Honor Guard here at YOUR Post. This is a very important tradition and it will complement any future memorial services here at the post with the addition of the Fallen Comrade Ceremony with our own bugle for the playing of Taps. We already have 5 volunteers and we need at least 5 more. If you’re interested, please see or call me and I’ll fill you in on the specifics. Please keep in mind that this is voluntary position and each member will be responsible for purchasing his own shirt, pants, hat and boots. I’ll be ordering the M-1’s ASAP.

4th,      Please place on your calendar that 13 March at the regularly scheduled General Membership meeting, we will have nominations for next year’s officers. Your input and nominations is needed so plan on attending if you can. Also, place on your calendar, the very important date of 10 April when elections will be held for next year’s officers.

And

5th,       As I have stated in the past, I have been honored to be YOUR commander for the past 8 months and look forward to seeing each of you here at OUR post in the near future.

FROM THE SR. VICE COMMANDER:  Tim Beebe

I thank everyone for your help in getting dues paid.  A special thanks to Tim Wallace for all his help in contacting members and membership drives.
We have two more membership drives coming up, the first will be on April 10th at the National Guard Armory in Jacksonville, following our post meeting.  The second one will take place on May 15th, starting at 9am, at Marshall Field on Fort McClellan.  Everyone is invited to come out and help recruit new members.  As you all know we need to start recruiting the younger veterans, which also means the post has to become family oriented.  Any member or auxiliary member with any suggestions on this let me know.

FROM THE JR. VICE COMMANDER:  Ray Johnson

I would like to thank everyone who helped in distributing all the entry forms to the Schools, Law Enforcement Agencys, Fire Departments and EMS personnel.  Our Patriot's Pen winner also won at District and State Level and placed 42nd in National Competion.
One date to keep in mind is may 22nd, our first Buddy Poppy drive this year.  As you know we have the roadblock at Lenlock and Weaver Road, Foodland on Alexandria and Golden Springs Winn-Dixie.  We need help at all three locations, so please come out and help us.

FROM THE QUARTERMASTER/ADJUTANT:  Jim Giles

The front door lock was changed on 1 January.  To get a new key, show a current Post 924  VFW membership card to the bartender and she will change out keys for you.

FROM THE SURGEON:  Tim Wallace

FROM THE AUXILIARY PRESIDENT:  Mary Ann Dial

FROM THE CANTEEN MANAGER: Carol Giles

First of all I want to thank all the members that come to our canteen and help support us during the week and on weekends.
We have some exciting new things going on on Friday and Saturday nights.
-  The nightly drawing has changed.  Instead of just a free dance passes, you have a chance to win free drinks, steak dinners and cash prizes from $5.00 to $50.00.
-  Every saturday night is ladies night, with ladies getting their first drink free upon admission to the dance.
-  Membership appreciation night the last saturday of the month, with Post 924 Members and 924 Auxiliary Members getting free admission to the dance by showing a valid membership card.
On Wednesday nights we have a pot luck dinner at 6:00 pm and at 6:30 pm shuffleboard starts, come out and enjoy the fun.  If you never played before don’t worry there will be someone to help you learn, everyone just wants to have fun.
Every Monday night at 6 pm and Friday night at 7:30 pm we are having a Texas Hold-um tournament which is open to members and their guests, so far everyone has been having a pretty good time.  Why not try your luck and bring a guest so they can have a good time to.
